Nestled in the northeastern tapestry of Belo Horizonte, the Alumnus College emerges as a testament to architectural grace, a structure designed to cradle the aspirations of its high school scholars. Envisioned by the collaborative genius of BIRI, Estúdio Pedro Haruf, and MOBIO Arquitetura, this project unfolds like a sonnet written in concrete and air. It whispers the promise of expansion within the Fernão Dias neighborhood, a promise fulfilled through spaces that breathe and corridors that invite.
The design journey began with an expansive program of needs, constrained by a legislation that imposes a rigorous coefficient of utilization. Yet, within these confines, the architects found liberation. They sculpted areas of communal use into versatile havens, where every corner could transform into arenas of active engagement and learning. The building's placement across the permissible projection respects the prescribed setbacks, yet transcends them with an architectural sleight of hand.
Here, the conventional is upended as the classrooms and sports court are elevated, suspended in a celestial ballet above the ground. This strategic levitation liberates the ground floor, creating a void that invites the wind to dance through the structure, crafting an ambiance of open-air freedom, even beneath the sheltering canopy. The building's form is a volume that 'floats' upon the pilotis of the ground level, an ethereal presence that seems to defy gravity.
Stepping into this space is akin to entering a realm where light and shadow play their eternal game, casting patterns that shift with the passage of time. The materials chosen resonate with the warmth of the earth and the cool embrace of a gentle breeze. Concrete, in its raw, honest beauty, becomes a canvas for nature's artistry, while glass panels reflect the changing moods of the sky, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior.
The experience of traversing these halls is a sensory voyage. The tactile pleasure of the polished surfaces contrasts with the rugged authenticity of exposed materials, creating a dialogue between refinement and rawness. As one moves through the building, the play of light becomes a silent guide, leading the way through spaces that are as much about feeling as they are about function.
In the Alumnus College, learning is not confined to the classroom. It spills into every corner, every open space, where students gather in impromptu discussions or find solitude in quiet reflection. The architecture fosters a sense of community, where every element is a participant in the educational journey.
This project is a celebration of architectural ingenuity, where challenges are met with creativity and constraints become opportunities. It stands as a beacon of modern design, a place where the spirit of learning is nurtured by the very walls that surround it. In this floating haven, the future is not just imagined, it is built.
