In the tranquil valley of Beiarn, Nordland, an architectural whisper nestles itself at the foot of the majestic Svartisen glacier. This creation, named GLØDE, is not merely a fireplace shelter; it is a testament to the poetry of materiality, a small-scale refuge where the warmth of fire gathers stories and souls. Conceived by the innovative minds of the MA/CO – Matières Communes collective, founded by architecture students from ENSAP Bordeaux, this structure is a harmonious blend of human intention and natural grace.
GLØDE's genesis was one of tactile engagement and intuitive experimentation, emerging from a full-scale design-build process. The collective's inaugural venture into the realm of built architecture, this project embodies an ethos of direct construction, material exploration, and the joy of collaborative creation. Spanning 24 square meters, the shelter was crafted over ten days during a three-week odyssey across Europe, its form taking shape through the hands of those who dared to dream of spaces that speak.
The essence of GLØDE is its embrace of the landscape. It offers a sheltered pause, a place where the traveller and the landscape converse intimately. Set against the forest's edge, the shelter is anchored to the valley floor, its roof and hearth forming a cocoon of warmth and refuge. Crafted from approximately 90% reclaimed materials, GLØDE is a narrative of renewal and respect for the past. These materials, sourced primarily from the nearby lodge's barn and other dormant resources, weave a tale of forgotten histories finding new purpose. Additional elements, gathered from the environment, further enrich this dialogue between past and present. The construction process was one of adaptability, allowing the design to evolve organically, guided by the available materials and the hands that shaped them.
The placement of GLØDE is both a strategic and symbolic gesture. It rejuvenates a once-neglected area, developed in concert with local farmers who tend to the landscape.
